Overview

Nasr ibn Sayyar was a governor of Balkh and Samarqand. He fought wars with the Turks and had a dispute with al-Junayd 1.

Governance of Balkh and Samarqand

Nasr ibn Sayyar was in Balkh during the period al-Tabari describes, before the disagreement between him and al-Junayd arose. In Samarqand the people were under siege, and its tax was in the hands of Umayr ibn Sa'da al-Shaybani 1 2.

War with the Turks

According to al-Tabari, Nasr ibn Sayyar came forward with thirty horsemen and fought the Turks until he drove them from their positions, and then the Turks were defeated 3.

The day of the Gate

al-Tabari reports that Nasr ibn Sayyar fought valiantly on the day of the Gate, when his sword and the straps of his stirrups broke. He struck with his leg until he was badly wounded. Al-Junayd then praised his valour, and Nasr composed verses in response 4.

Notes for researchers

  • Citations use the scan page number, not the printed pagination. The years in the page headers could not be read, so they are not given here.
  • The quotations have been checked to exist on the cited pages, but each report still needs to be read against the page images before publication. Some reports (pp. 201, 204, 221) are garbled in the original.
  • What is said about Nasr on pages 416, 445, 446, 492, 493, 499 and 501 is not included here, because those pages have not yet been read.
  • The Tabari edition used in the repository (the edition of Abu al-Fadl Ibrahim) has not yet been collated against this scan.
