Baqum

باقوم

A carpenter, client of the Banu Umayya, to whom some reports attribute the Prophet ﷺ's three-step tamarisk minbar (the chains are weak in Ibn Hajar's assessment). The name Baqum (may God be pleased with him) is also given to the Roman said to have helped Quraysh rebuild the Kaaba.

Overview

Baqum, also said Baqul, the carpenter, a client of the Umayyads. 1 His entry in the "Isaba" turns on two reports: that he was the maker of the Prophet's pulpit, and that he was the Byzantine who built the Ka'ba.

The maker of the pulpit

Abd al-Razzaq relates from Salih, client of al-Tawama, that Baqul, client of al-As ibn Umayya, made the Prophet's pulpit from tamarisk in three steps, and Ibn Hajar judges its chain weak and interrupted. 1 Abu Nu'aym relates from Salih that "Baqum, client of Sa'id ibn al-As", connected, but it too is weak. 1 In the sound hadith from Sahl ibn Sa'd, the maker of the pulpit was a slave of an Ansari woman. 1

The builder of the Ka'ba

Ibn Uyayna relates from Ubayd ibn Umayr that the man who built the Ka'ba for Quraysh was called Baqum, and was a Byzantine who was in a ship held by the wind. Ibn Hajar says that its narrators are trustworthy, though its chain is interrupted, and that the story of the Byzantine's building the Ka'ba is well known. 2 In the report of Uthman ibn Saj from Ibn Jurayj, a Byzantine called Baqum used to trade to al-Mandab, his ship broke at al-Shu'ayba, and he offered Quraysh timber and a carpenter. 2 See the rebuilding of the Ka'ba.

Views on the maker of the pulpit

The views on this matter differ in the Isaba; they are set out in order in the list of views at the top of the page.

In "Al-Rahiq al-Makhtum" (p. 62)

The Sealed Nectar says that when Quraysh divided the Ka'ba among its tribes and began building it, a Byzantine builder called Baqum took charge of the building. 3 4 See the rebuilding of the Ka'ba.
