Overview

Abu Umayya ibn al-Mughira of the Banu Makhzum. He was the man whose opinion settled the dispute of Quraysh over placing the Black Stone at the rebuilding of the Kaaba: that they should make arbiter the first person who entered them by the mosque gate. 1 2

His opinion in the arbitration

When the building reached the place of the Black Stone, the tribes differed over who should have the honour of placing it, and the dispute went on for four or five nights until it nearly became war within the sacred territory. 1 2 Abu Umayya ibn al-Mughira al-Makhzumi proposed that they make arbiter in what they disputed whoever first entered upon them by the mosque gate. They accepted it, and the one who entered was Muhammad. They cried out that he was the trustworthy one, and they accepted his judgement. 1 2 3

What is not recorded here

Al-Rahiq al-Makhtum does not give his full lineage at this point, nor that he was the father of Umm Salama, the Prophet's wife, nor his title "Zad al-Rakib". The index card from the book "Nisa' hawl al-Rasul" refers to this (p. 93), but that text has not been read yet, so it will be completed from there.

For young visitors

When the people of Mecca nearly fought over who would place the Black Stone, Abu Umayya suggested they make arbiter whoever first entered the mosque. Muhammad entered, and everyone accepted his judgement.
