Overview

Aqil ibn Abi Talib al-Hashimi, the eldest of his brothers and the last of them to die, grandfather of the hadith scholar Abdallah ibn Muhammad ibn Aqil; he had sons, among them Muslim and Yazid — by whom he was given his kunya — Sa'id, Ja'far, Abu Sa'id al-Ahwal, Muhammad, Abd al-Rahman and Abd Allah. 1

From his life

He witnessed Badr as a polytheist, having been brought out to it under compulsion, and was taken captive; having no wealth, his uncle al-Abbas ransomed him. He died in the caliphate of Mu'awiya. 1

In al-Taqrib

Ibn Hajar lists him in al-Taqrib under no. 4661: "Aqil ibn Abi Talib al-Hashimi, brother of Ali and Ja'far, the eldest: a Companion, learned in genealogy; he died in the year sixty (60 AH), and it was said later." 2

In Kashif al-Dhahabi

Ibn Hajar cites Kashif al-Dhahabi: his son Muhammad, Abu Salih al-Samman and a group narrated from him; he became blind and died in the time of Mu'awiya. 2
