Overview

Al-Rabi' ibn Ziyad al-Harithi. In a report of al-Baladhuri, Abu Musa al-Ash'ari sent him to the Asawira when they sided with the Kalbaniyya. 1

The report

Al-Rabi' fought them, then they asked for safe conduct on condition that they should embrace Islam, fight the Madus, form alliances with whomever they wished, and settle where they liked. 1

His entry in al-Isaba

He is al-Rabi' ibn Ziyad ibn Abd Allah ibn Sufyan ibn Nashib ibn Hidm ibn Awadh ibn Ghalib ibn Qutay'a ibn Abs al-Absi, a famous horseman, known as al-Harithi 2. The entry reports that Abd Allah ibn Amir appointed him over Sijistan in the year 29 AH and it was conquered at his hands, and that his brother al-Muhajir ibn Ziyad was killed at Manadhir 2. Al-Bukhari, Ibn Abi Hatim and Ibn Hibban mention him among the Successors, and Ibn al-Kalbi reports on his life and poetry in the Jahiliyya 2.

For younger visitors

Al-Rabi' ibn Ziyad al-Harithi was one of the horsemen of the Khurasan conquests; Abd Allah ibn Amir appointed him over Sijistan in 29 AH and it was conquered at his hands, and he lived long into the days of Umar and after 2.

Notes for researchers

  • al-Isaba fi Tamyiz al-Sahaba, entries 2615-2616 (al-Maktaba al-Asriyya scan, p. 455); the entry lists him among the Successors and reports doubt about his having reached Islam except in al-Rishati's account — his Companionship is unsettled.
  • The report of fighting the Asawira in al-Baladhuri stands on a single account and needs corroboration.
