Overview
Al-Baladhuri relates that Ziyad ibn Abi Sufyan appointed al-Rabi ibn Ziyad al-Harithi over Khurasan in 51 AH, and transferred with him about fifty thousand people from the two garrison cities with their families. He settled them beyond the river. 1
Those transferred
Among them were Buraydah ibn al-Husayb al-Aslami, who died in Merv in the days of Yazid ibn Mu'awiya. Also among them was Abu Barza al-Aslami, who died in Merv. 1
The source says that al-Rabi was the first to order the troops to ride in pairs. 1
The death of al-Rabi
Al-Baladhuri says that when news reached him of the killing of Hujr ibn Adi al-Kindi, it grieved him and he called for death; he collapsed that day and died in 53 AH. He appointed his son Abd Allah as his successor. Abd Allah fought the people of Amul, defeated them, then made peace with them, and returned to Merv, where he died two months later. 1
