Overview

Al-Rabi' ibn Sulayman al-Mu'adhdhin, the muezzin and companion of al-Shafi'i. The "Classes of the Jurists" says that he related the books of al-Shafi'i, and that al-Shafi'i said of him: "al-Rabi' is my transmitter."

His death

The sources differ on his death. Ikrima ibn Muhammad ibn Bishr and Muhammad ibn Sufyan ibn Sa'id related the report of al-Shafi'i's death in Egypt in 204 AH. Al-Mas'udi says that al-Rabi' died in 270 AH, and al-Shirazi in "Classes of the Jurists" agrees. 1 2

The report about the books

Al-Mas'udi relates that al-Shafi'i borrowed some books of Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Kufi, and did not send them back. He wrote verses to him that knowledge forbids its people to withhold it from them, and he sent him most of his books. 3
