    Overview

Shams al-A'imma Muhammad b. 'Abd al-Ghaffar b. Muhammad al-'Almawi al-Kurdari the Hanafi — of Kurdar, a district of Khwarazm in the dependency of Jurjaniyya; Ibn Kamal Pasha called him "the teacher of the imams absolutely, the one to whom men were delegated from every horizon." 1

    His madhhab

He studied under Burhan al-Din 'Ali al-Marghinani, author of the Hidaya, under Majd al-Din al-Samarqandi, Fakhr al-Din Qadi Khan, Nur al-Din al-Sabuni and others; he mastered the madhhab and raised the science of usul al-fiqh after it had faded since the days of Qadi Abu Zayd al-Dabusi and Shams al-A'imma al-Sarakhsi, and many jurists read fiqh under him. He died at Bukhara on Friday 9 Muharram — Ibn al-'Imad records it under 643 while Ibn Kamal Pasha states it was the year before. 1
