Ahmad ibn Uways the Jalayirid, sultan of Baghdad, Tabriz and the Iraqi lands after his brother Shaykh Husayn (784) — a dreaded, blood-spilling sultan with tyranny over his amirs and troops, yet versed in several sciences, complete in astronomy, and an accomplished musician in knowledge and performance, immersed in the pleasures souls desire; Barquq honoured him exceedingly, gave him the vice-sultanate patent of Baghdad, and would not let him kiss the ground, out of reverence 1.

Shadharat al-Dhahab describes him as brave and awe-inspiring, with power over his subjects, a shedder of blood, and unjust to his amirs and troops. It says he had a share in several sciences, knowledge of the stars, and skill in music. 2

According to the Shadharat, Barquq honoured him and gave him the deputy sultanate in Baghdad, and he went to Baghdad and entered it. 2

According to Ibn Khaldun, he fled when Timur advanced on Baghdad, and joined Sultan Barquq, calling on him for help. He went out with him in the armies to the Euphrates, and Barquq sent troops to support him, and he took Baghdad from a small detachment of Timur's army. 3

Barquq's accession as the first Circassian sultan

In Ramadan 784 Barquq took the sultanate as al-Zahir — the FIRST of the Circassians. In Rajab 785 he seized, deposed and citadel-imprisoned al-Mutawakkil, hailing Umar al-Wathiq then Zakariya al-Musta'sim; repenting, he freed and restored al-Mutawakkil. Imprisoned again then freed in 792, he ruled till his death in Shawwal 801, when his son Faraj rose as al-Nasir.
