Overview
The first of the Circassian Mamluks to take the sultanate. He took it in Ramadan 784 AH and was titled al-Zahir. 2
In his rule
He seized the caliph al-Mutawakkil, deposed him, and imprisoned him in the citadel of the mountain in 785 AH. Al-Wathiq Umar and then al-Musta'sim Zakariya were given the allegiance. Then he regretted it, brought out al-Mutawakkil and restored him to the caliphate. He himself was imprisoned at al-Karak when al-Salih Hajji was restored, then brought out in 792 AH and returned to his kingdom. He continued until he died in Shawwal 801 AH, and his son Faraj was set up. 2
In "Shadharat al-Dhahab"
It says that he was Barquq ibn Anas the Circassian, bought by Yalbugha al-Kabir. It describes him as valiant, brave and awe-inspiring, loving the poor and giving much charity, and that in his rule he abolished many tolls. Among his works is the madrasa standing between the two palaces in Cairo. 3
