Summary
Malik transmits from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Jabir ibn Abdallah al-Ansari, who said: we went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ on the expedition of Banu Anmar. While I was resting under a tree, the Messenger of God came, and I said: come to the shade. He dismounted, and I went to a sack of ours and found a young cucumber; I broke it and brought it to the Messenger of God. He asked: where did you get this? I said: we brought it from Medina. We had a companion of ours who was readied to graze our camel-herd. He turned to go with the herd, wearing two worn-out cloaks. The Messenger of God looked at him and said: does he not have other garments than these? I said: yes, he has two garments in the bag which I clothed him in. He said: call him and tell him to wear them. I called him, and he put them on, then turned to go. The Messenger of God said: what is wrong with him? May God strike his neck; is this not better? The man heard it and said: Messenger of God, in the path of God? He said: in the path of God. The man was killed in the path of God. The editor notes that Yahya ibn Ma'in said Zayd ibn Aslam did not hear from Jabir, so the report is relayed (mursal) for him, while Ibn Hibban and Ibn Abd al-Barr reported a view that he did hear. 1
