«الثُّلُثُ، وَالثُّلُثُ كَثيرٌ»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
Malik transmits from Ibn Shihab, from Amir ibn Saad ibn Abi Waqqas, from his father, that he said: the Messenger visited me in the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage, during a severe pain that had grown on me. I said: Messenger of God, my pain has reached what you see, and I have property, and no one inherits from me except a daughter of mine. Should I give charity with a third of my property? He said no. I said: half? He said no. Then the Messenger said: a third, and a third is much. It is better that you leave your heirs wealthy than leave them poor, begging of people; whatever you spend seeking God's face you will be rewarded for, even what you put into your wife's mouth. I said: Messenger of God, shall I be left behind after my companions? The Messenger said: you will not be left behind, and if you do good deeds you will gain in rank and exaltation; perhaps you will be left behind until people benefit from you and others are harmed by you. O God, complete the migration of my companions and do not return them on their heels; but the wretched one is Saad ibn Khawla. 1
