Summary
Malik transmits from Abu al-Zinad, from Sulayman ibn Yasar, that Nufay, a mukatab (a slave with a contract of manumission) of Umm Salama, wife of the Prophet ﷺ, or her slave, had a free wife. He divorced her twice and then wanted to take her back. The wives of the Prophet told him to go to Uthman ibn Affan (may God be pleased with him) and ask him. He met Uthman on the steps holding the hand of Zayd ibn Thabit (may God be pleased with him), and asked them both. They both answered at once: she is forbidden to you, she is forbidden to you. 1
