Summary
A report from Malik that he was told Ali ibn Abi Talib (may God be pleased with him) and Abdullah ibn Abbas (may God be pleased with him) used to say the middle prayer is the dawn prayer, in the chapter on the middle prayer. Malik says the saying of Ali and Ibn Abbas is the most beloved of what he has heard on the matter. The Muwatta gives three sayings in this chapter: afternoon, from Aisha and Hafsa; noon, from Zayd ibn Thabit (may God be pleased with him); and dawn, from Ali and Ibn Abbas, and Malik prefers the last. The editor notes that Abu Mus'ab and Suwayd transmitted it. 1
