«لولا أن يشق على أمته لأمرهم بالسواك مع كل وضوء»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
A report that Malik transmits from Ibn Shihab from Humayd ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf (may God be pleased with him) from Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him), as his own saying, in the chapter on the toothstick: had it not been a hardship on his community, he would have ordered them to use the toothstick with every ablution. The editor notes Ibn Abd al-Barr's view that it enters the musnad because it connects through more than one channel and by what its wording shows. Most transmitters from Malik gave the stopped wording, while Ibn Abi Uways, Bishr ibn Umar, Rawh ibn Ubada and Ibn Mahdi gave it raised in Ahmad, Ibn Khuzayma, al-Nasa'i and al-Bayhaqi. 1 2
