al-Azd

Al-Azd is a large clan of Kahlan, of the Qahtanite line ¹. In The Sealed Nectar's division of the emigrants from Kahlan, they come first. They emigrated from Yemen on the judgement of their leader Imran ibn Amr Muzayqiya', and their branches scattered to Medina, Mecca, Oman, Tihama and Syria ^{2 3}.

The emigration of the Azd followed the view of their chief and elder, Imran ibn Amr Muzayqiya'. They moved about the lands of Yemen, sending out scouts, and then went northward ².

The author details the places where they settled after the journey ²:

• Tha'laba ibn Amr turned toward the Hijaz and settled between al-Tha'labiyya and Dhu Qar. When his son grew up, he set out toward Medina and settled there. Among his sons were al-Aws and al-Khazraj, the sons of Haritha ibn Tha'laba.
• Haritha ibn Amr, who is Khuza'a, and his sons moved through the regions of the Hijaz until they reached Marr al-Zahran. They then took possession of the Sanctuary and settled in Mecca, expelling its inhabitants, Jurhum.
• Imran ibn Amr settled in Oman, where he and his sons remained. They are the Azd of Oman.
• The tribes of Nasr ibn al-Azd stayed in Tihama. They are the Azd Shanu'a.
• Jafna ibn Amr went to Syria, where he and his sons settled. He is the father of the kings of the Ghassanids, named after a water in the Hijaz called Ghassan, where they first alighted.

The author reports the preference of Sulayman al-Nadawi, that the house of Ghassan and the Ansar, the Aws and the Khazraj, descend from the lineage of Nabit ibn Ishmael and not from Qahtan ^{4 5}. Attributing these branches to the Azd is therefore a matter of dispute among genealogists.
