the wars of Zuhayr ibn Janāb — the ḥaram of Ghaṭafān destroyed, Kulayb and al-Muhalhil taken

حروب زهير بن جناب الكلبي — تعطيل حرم غطفان وأسر كليب ومهلهل

500 CE

Zuhayr ibn Janāb al-Kalbī — called «the soothsayer» for his judgment, said to have lived 250 years (some say 450) and fought two hundred battles — was one of the few all Quḍāʿa obeyed. When Banū Baghīḍ built a ḥaram on Mecca's model he destroyed it and killed a horseman inside it, then freed the captives and returned the women. Taxing Bakr and Taghlib for Abraha, he was stabbed through in his sleep by Ibn Ziyāba al-Tamīmī; he lay still, had his men fake his funeral with a corpse of folded clothes, then mustered and routed both tribes — Kulayb and al-Muhalhil, the two sons of Rabīʿa, were taken prisoner and their knights slaughtered. His sister's gifts of a bag of sand and a bag of thorns warned him of Banū'l-Qayn's coming 1.

Summary

Zuhayr ibn Janab al-Kalbi was the man around whom the Quda'a tribes gathered. He was called "al-Kahin" (the soothsayer) for the soundness of his judgement. He lived two hundred and fifty years, or it is said four hundred and fifty, and fought two hundred battles in that time. He desecrated a sanctuary that the Banu Baghid of Ghatafan had built on the model of the sanctuary of Mecca, and killed a horseman inside it. He fought Bakr and Taghlib while collecting tribute for Abraha. Ibn Ziyaba al-Taymi stabbed him as he slept, with a thrust that passed through to his back; he kept silent about the wound and made his death appear, and they buried wrapped garments. Then he gathered his people, defeated Bakr and Taghlib, and captured Kulayb and Muhalhil, the two sons of Rabi'a. His sister warned him about the army of Banu al-Qayn by sending him two bundles: one held sand and the other thorns. 1

The War of al-Basus

The Basus war, the longest and most storied of the Arabs' days: when the mare-camel Sarab strayed into Kulayb's forbidden spring pasture he shot her udder as threatened, and al-Basus's cry of shame — 'wa-dhalah!' — told her nephew Jasas ibn Murra that honour demanded blood; he speared Kulayb ibn Rabi'a, the Taghlibi lord under whom all Ma'add had united, and Kulayb's brother al-Muhalhil spent forty years exacting the feud between Bakr and Taghlib.
