the day of Khazāz — all Maʿadd under Kulayb break the Yemen host

يوم خزاز — اجتماع معد على كليب

470 CE

Khazaz

A Yemeni king held part of a Maʿadd embassy hostage, demanding their chiefs come covenant obedience or the captives die. Kulayb ibn Rabīʿa summoned Rabīʿa and all Maʿadd gathered to him — one of only three men ever so followed — with al-Saffāḥ al-Taghlibī leading the van and ordered to light signal fires on Mount Khazāz, by Ṭakhfā on the Basra–Mecca road: two fires if the enemy closed. When the fires rose, Kulayb brought the host and at Khazāz they broke Madhḥij and scattered the Yemen host — though the genealogists said no one knows who held the chief command that day, for ʿAmr ibn Kulthūm never claimed it in his boast though his mother was Kulayb's daughter 1.

Summary

The Day of Khazaz: a king of Yemen held back some of a delegation from Mudar as hostages and demanded pledges from their chiefs. Kulayb Wa'il gathered Rabi'a, and all of Mudar rallied around him; he was one of three men around whom Mudar rallied. He placed al-Saffah al-Taghlibi at the head of his vanguard and ordered him to light a fire on the mountain of Khazaz at Takhfa; if the enemy reached him, he was to light two fires. Madhhij came by night with the armies of Yemen, and he lit two fires. Kulayb came up with the troops, and they met at Khazaz. Madhhij was defeated and its forces scattered. Amr ibn Kulthum, Kulayb's grandson through his daughter, referred to the day in verse, and he kept his claim to leadership in it despite the pride he took in the day. 1

The War of al-Basus

The Basus war, the longest and most storied of the Arabs' days: when the mare-camel Sarab strayed into Kulayb's forbidden spring pasture he shot her udder as threatened, and al-Basus's cry of shame — 'wa-dhalah!' — told her nephew Jasas ibn Murra that honour demanded blood; he speared Kulayb ibn Rabi'a, the Taghlibi lord under whom all Ma'add had united, and Kulayb's brother al-Muhalhil spent forty years exacting the feud between Bakr and Taghlib.
