Umar's Friday sermon on the stoning verse and on Abu Bakr's pledge

خطبة عمر الجمعة في آية الرجم وبيعة أبي بكر

c. 12 June 632 CE · c. Rabi' I 11 AH

Medina

On the first Friday after the death Umar recalled a verse of stoning, which he said had been in God's book and had been recited, memorised and applied, and feared that someone might say there is no stoning in God's book; he then called the pledge to Abu Bakr a sudden act that God had averted the harm of, and said whoever pledges to a man without consultation has no pledge, nor has the one he pledged to.

Overview

On the first Friday after the death of the Prophet ﷺ Umar stood on the pulpit and mentioned the verse of stoning, and said it was from the Book of God: "we recited it, understood it, and the Messenger of God stoned, and we stoned after him"; he feared that someone would say, "we do not find stoning in the Book of God", and they would go astray by abandoning an obligation God had sent down. 1

The pledge

He then mentioned the allegiance to Abu Bakr and said that it had been a slip which God guarded against its evil, and that whoever gives allegiance to a man without the consultation of the Muslims, neither he nor the one who gave it has any allegiance; and that there is none among them to whom necks are turned like Abu Bakr. 2 See the portico.

Marks of the report

  • The sermon is from Ibn Ishaq from al-Zuhri from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib from Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him); in it "Do not turn away from your fathers, for it is disbelief in you" is given as among what was recited. 1
  • The text of the verse is not in the report itself and is not given here; the museum reads the report as Ibn Ishaq relates it and sets out the disagreement over the ruling on stoning at its entrance (Tier A).

Opinions on the question

The question: Was there a verse on stoning in the Qur'an whose recitation was dropped? And what does Umar's sermon say about consultation and the pledge?
