Zayd ibn Haritha's raid on Banu Fazara and the killing of Umm Qirfa

غزوة زيد بن حارثة بني فزارة ومقتل أم قرفة

c. 628 CE · c. 6 AH

Wadi al-Qura

Zayd ibn Haritha (may God be pleased with him) raided Wadi al-Qura and met Banu Fazara; some of his men were hit, he was carried off wounded from among the dead, and Ward ibn Amr ibn Madash was killed, so Zayd swore no water would touch his head from major impurity until he raided Fazara. When he recovered the Prophet ﷺ sent him with an army; he slaughtered them at Wadi al-Qura, Qays ibn al-Musahhar al-Ya'muri killed Mas'ada ibn Hakama ibn Malik ibn Hudhayfa ibn Badr, and Umm Qirfa, Fatima bint Rabi'a ibn Badr, an old woman married to Malik ibn Hudhayfa, was captured with a daughter and Abdullah ibn Mas'ada. Zayd ordered Qays to kill Umm Qirfa, 'and he killed her violently', and they brought her daughter and Ibn Mas'ada to the Prophet; the daughter fell to Salama ibn al-Akwa', the Prophet asked for her and gave her to his maternal uncle Hazn ibn Abi Wahb. The episode is contested and carries perspectives.

Banu Fazara

Overview

Two expeditions of Zayd ibn Haritha against the Banu Fazara in Wadi al-Qura: in the first, Zayd and his companions were struck; in the second, he took vengeance, and Umm Qirfa was killed. 1

The first expedition

Zayd raided Wadi al-Qura and met the Banu Fazara there. Some of his companions were struck, and Zayd was carried off wounded, with a remnant of life, from among the dead. Wurd ibn Amr ibn Madash of the Banu Sa'd ibn Hudhayl was also struck there; Ibn Hisham says Sa'd ibn Hudhaym, struck by one of the Banu Badr. 1

The second expedition and the killing of Umm Qirfa

When Zayd returned he swore not to touch his head with water for ritual impurity until he had raided the Banu Fazara. When he recovered from his wounds, the Prophet sent him against them with an army, and he killed them in Wadi al-Qura and took booty. 1 Qays ibn al-Musakhkhar al-Ya'mari killed Masada ibn Hakama ibn Malik ibn Hudhayfa ibn Badr, and Umm Qirfa Fatima bint Rabi'a ibn Badr was taken captive. She was an old woman, the wife of Malik ibn Hudhayfa ibn Badr, with her daughter, and Abd Allah ibn Masada; in another copy, Ubayd Allah. 1 Zayd ordered Qays ibn al-Musakhkhar to kill Umm Qirfa, "and he killed her with a violent killing", and then they came to the Prophet with the daughter of Umm Qirfa and the son of Masada. 1

Umm Qirfa's daughter

Umm Qirfa's daughter fell to Salama ibn Amr ibn al-Akwa', who had captured her; she was in a noble house of her people, and the Arabs used to say: if you were more honoured than Umm Qirfa, you would not be more so. The Prophet asked Salama for her and he gave her to him; the Prophet gave her as a gift to his maternal uncle Hazn ibn Abi Wahb, and she bore him Abd al-Rahman ibn Hazn. 1 2

Qays's verses

Qays ibn al-Musakhkhar said three verses about the killing of Masada, mentioning his striving for the vengeance of Warid and his return upon a champion of the Banu Badr, a raider, and his riding with a spear that was "qa'dabi" like a meteor in a bare place. The editors note that the verse has an irregular rhyme (iqwa') and that "al-qa'dabi" is ascribed to Qa'dab, the maker of spear-heads. 2

Marks of the report

  • There is no date in Ibn Ishaq; the authors of the expeditions differ on it.
  • "Sa'd ibn Hudhayl" in Ibn Ishaq and "Sa'd ibn Hudhaym" in Ibn Hisham; "Abd Allah" or "Ubayd Allah" for the son of Masada. 1
  • The well-known manner of Umm Qirfa's killing in later books of the expeditions is not in Ibn Ishaq, who is content with "a violent killing". 1

Opinions on the question

The question: How is the killing of Umm Qirfa in Zayd ibn Haritha's raid to be read?

First opinion · Sunni tradition (the museum's frame) · Sunni: Ibn IshaqMain reference

He relates the report in the list of raids without a named chain and without comment, and gives no reason for the killing of Umm Qirfa other than that she was in a noble house of her people. 1

Sunni tradition (the museum's frame) · Sunni: later scholarsMain reference

Sunni scholars of later times discuss the manner of killing in other accounts beyond Ibn Ishaq, and weaken its additions or explain them by Umm Qirfa's incitement against the Prophet and her preparation of men; the specific references have not yet been added (needs_source). 1

Researchers viewOther opinion

Modern studies examine the accuracy of the details, their sources and the context of the report in Medina's conflict with Fazara and Ghatafan; a specific academic reference has not yet been added (needs_source). 1

Zayd ibn Haritha's raid on Judham and the Prophet's restitution

When Dihya ibn Khalifa al-Kalbi returned from Caesar, al-Hunayd ibn Us and his son of the Dula' of Judham robbed him in the valley of Shinar; men of the Dubayb, Rifa'a ibn Zayd's clan who had converted, recovered his goods. When Dihya complained to the Prophet and asked for al-Hunayd's blood, the Prophet sent Zayd ibn Haritha with an army, which raided from al-Awlaj at al-Maqis, took property and people, killed al-Hunayd and his son and three others, and captured converts among them. A party of the Dubayb with Hassan ibn Milla rode to Zayd, who had Umm al-Kitab recited and proclaimed their quarter inviolable; they then rode to Rifa'a and three nights on to Medina, where the Prophet read his own letter to Rifa'a, asked three times what he should do about the dead, and sent Ali with his sword to Zayd, who restored everything down to a woman's cushion. Ibn Ishaq has it from men of Judham learned in it.
