Madyan

Ibn Hisham tells it from Abdullah ibn Hasan ibn Hasan from his mother Fatima bint al-Husayn: the Prophet ﷺ sent Zayd ibn Haritha (may God be pleased with him) towards Madyan with Dumayra, the client of Ali ibn Abi Talib (may God be pleased with him), and a brother of his; he took captives from the people of Mina', the coasts, who were sold and separated; the Prophet came out as they wept, asked what ailed them, was told they had been separated, and said: sell them only together. Ibn Hisham: he meant mothers and children.

Overview

A report that Ibn Hisham relates, not Ibn Ishaq, from Abd Allah ibn Hasan ibn Hasan from his mother Fatima bint al-Husayn ibn Ali (may God be pleased with him): the Prophet sent Zayd ibn Haritha toward Madyan, with Dumayra, a client of Ali ibn Abi Talib, and a brother of his. 1

The captives

Fatima said: he took captives from the people of Mina'a, that is the coasts, where there were mixed people; they were sold and separated from one another. The Prophet went out to them while they were weeping, and said: what is the matter with them? He was told: they have been separated. He said: do not sell them except all together. 1 Ibn Hisham explains that he meant the mothers and the children. 1

In the museum

The report belongs to the origins of the chapter on forbidding the separation of a mother from her child in the sale of slaves; it is among the few places in the raids where the weeping of captives is heard. It is read with the report of Safana, daughter of Hatim. Its chain is of the People of the House: Fatima bint al-Husayn from an unnamed person. 1

Marks of the report

  • "Abd Allah ibn Hasan ibn Hasan" in the printed text, and "Abd Allah ibn Husayn ibn Hasan" in one copy, which the editors consider a distortion. 1
  • The words "and the expedition of Zayd ibn Haritha to Madyan" are missing from one copy. 1
  • "Mina'" is explained by the report as the coasts; its location is not fixed (needs_source).

The three years of the secret call

The first stage of the call to Islam — individual and secret for three years — in which the first band believed: Khadija, Ali, Zayd and Abu Bakr on the first day, then those whom Abu Bakr called, then a company Ibn Hisham numbers at over forty from every clan of Quraysh; during it prayer was first prescribed.
