Summary
Mu'awiya sent Muslim ibn Uqba al-Murri to Dumat al-Jandal. Its people had refused to pledge allegiance to either Ali or Mu'awiya, so he called them to obey Mu'awiya, and they refused. Ali then sent Malik ibn Ka'b al-Hamdani with a force. He met them, they fought for a day, and then Muslim withdrew in defeat. Malik went on calling them to pledge allegiance to Ali, but they said they would not pledge until the people had united around one imam, so he withdrew and left them. 1.
