Opinions on the question

The question: Why did Muawiya withhold the pledge to Ali, and did he contest the caliphate?

First opinion · Sunni tradition (the museum's frame)Main reference

The book, citing Ibn Hajar al-Haytami and Ibn Taymiyya, holds that Muawiya did not claim the caliphate; the strife arose from his demand for the killers (p. 188).

Academic viewSecondary opinion

No modern academic reading of Muawiya's motives is given in these pages (needs_source).

Other viewOther opinion

The book notes that some historians portrayed a dispute over the caliphate itself, which it rejects; it does not name them here (needs_source).

The three years of the secret call

The first stage of the call to Islam — individual and secret for three years — in which the first band believed: Khadija, Ali, Zayd and Abu Bakr on the first day, then those whom Abu Bakr called, then a company Ibn Hisham numbers at over forty from every clan of Quraysh; during it prayer was first prescribed.
