Overview
The Indian heartland escaped the 7th/13th-century wave of Mongol invasions, but its western fringes suffered repeatedly: the Multan area was attacked in 643/1245 and again in 683/1284-5 1.
Kabak's raid of 705
In 705/1305 the Mongols entered India under Kabak and crossed the Indus near Multan; Tughluq — Ghazi Malik, the warden of Dipalpur — met them and defeated them on their return march 2.
The Multan inscription
Ibn Battuta saw in Multan's congregational mosque an inscription recording that Tughluq fought the Mongols on twenty-nine occasions, which is why he was known as Ghazi Malik before he became sultan of Delhi 3.
