Hamra al-Asad → Medina

On the morning of Sunday 8 Shawwal 3 AH the Prophet ﷺ called the people to pursue Quraysh and said: only those who fought with us may come. The Muslims answered despite their wounds. They reached Hamra al-Asad, eight miles from Medina, and camped. The Prophet sent Ma'bad ibn Abi Ma'bad al-Khuza'i to Abu Sufyan, and at al-Rawha he waged a propaganda war of nerves on him: 'Muhammad has come out with a gathering I have never seen the like of, burning for you.' The Meccan army's resolve collapsed and they kept withdrawing to Mecca. Abu Sufyan sent riders of Abd al-Qays to threaten the Muslims, which only increased their faith. The Prophet stayed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, then returned and executed Abu Azza al-Jumahi, who had broken his pledge 1.

Overview

On the morning of Sunday, 8 Shawwal 3 AH, the Prophet called the people to follow Quraysh after Uhud, and he said: "None goes out with us except those who took part in the fighting." 1

The march out

The Muslims responded despite their wounds. They reached Hamra al-Asad, eight miles from Medina, and camped there. 1

The psychological war

The Prophet sent Ma'bad ibn Abi Ma'bad al-Khuza'i to Abu Sufyan. He reported to him that Muhammad had come out with a host the like of which he had not seen, burning with rage against them. The resolve of the Meccan army collapsed and they continued their withdrawal to Mecca. Abu Sufyan sent a party of riders from Abd al-Qays to carry a threat to the Muslims, but it only increased them in faith. 1

The return

The Prophet stayed three days and then returned on Wednesday. He had put to death Abu Azza al-Jumahi, who had broken his covenant. 2

The Sahih has it that the verse about those who answered the call was revealed about seventy men who set out in pursuit of the polytheists, among them Abu Bakr and al-Zubayr. 3
