Overview
On 27 Rajab 592 AH, al-Malik al-Adil Abu Bakr ibn Ayyub took the city of Damascus from his nephew al-Afdal Ali ibn Salah al-Din. 1
Background
The Asadi and Kurdish troops of Damascus inclined toward al-Afdal against his brother al-Aziz, ruler of Egypt, because al-Aziz had turned away from them and favoured the Nasiri mamluks. al-Afdal contested with al-Aziz, and al-Aziz withdrew defeated to Egypt. 1
By the agreement of Bilbays, al-Afdal was to have Jerusalem, all of Palestine, Tiberias and Jordan, and al-Adil was to remain in Egypt with al-Aziz. 1
Entry into Damascus
al-Adil won over al-Aziz, and he marched with him to Damascus, and they besieged it. They also won over one of al-Afdal's emirs, known as al-Aziz ibn Abi Ghalib al-Himsi, whom al-Afdal had favoured and trusted. At the time of the afternoon prayer he opened the eastern gate for them, and al-Adil entered. 1
al-Aziz halted at the Green Square west of Damascus, and al-Adil lodged in the house of Asad al-Din Shirkuh. 1
al-Adil and al-Aziz led al-Afdal to believe that they would leave the city to him, and then they made him agree to leave the citadel. 1
