Mar'ash (Germanikeia)

مرعش

Mar'ash (Germanikeia) of the Syrian-Jaziran marchland at the A'maq; Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him) took its fortress at Abu Ubayda's dispatch from Manbij on its people's evacuation, demolishing it; Mu'awiya built it as a garrisoned city, al-Abbas ibn al-Walid rebuilt and fortified it, raised its congregational mosque and levied a yearly contingent on Qinnasrin for it, and it passed through building and ruin between Marwan ibn Muhammad and the Romans until Salih ibn Ali rebuilt it in al-Mansur's caliphate and al-Mahdi enlarged its garrison; on its depths fell Michael's incursion of year 161, met by the sortie of Isa ibn Ali's mawalis.

Overview

Marash is one of the frontier posts of al-Sham on the Jazira side, near al-A'maq. Khalid ibn al-Walid conquered its fortress by sending Abu Ubayda from Manbij, on condition that its people leave, and then it was laid to ruin. 1 See The conquest of Marash.

Mu'awiya then built it as a city and settled a garrison in it. Al-Abbas ibn al-Walid developed it, fortified it and built its mosque. Building and ruin alternated in it between Marwan ibn Muhammad and the Byzantines, until Salih ibn Ali built it in the caliphate of al-Mansur, and al-Mahdi increased its garrison. 1

The raid of Michael in the year 161 AH struck its hinterland. See The raid of Michael. 1
