al-Hasan ibn Qahtaba

Al-Hasan ibn Qahtaba, one of the commanders of the soldiers of the people of Khurasan. Al-Baladhuri reports that al-Mansur sent him on a campaign from Hadithat al-Mawsil in 149 AH, and then he marched with al-Abbas ibn Muhammad to Malatya and the siege of Kamkh (the conquest of Kamkh). ¹

At the building of Malatya in 140 AH he was in the army of Abd al-Wahhab ibn Ibrahim. It is reported that he carried a stone to hand to the builders, and that he fed people from his own wealth at his kitchens (the rebuilding of Malatya). Abd al-Wahhab wrote about this to Abu Ja'far, who replied in disapproval, and permitted al-Hasan to feed the people without a crier. ¹

Al-Mahdi sent him on campaign in 162 AH. He travelled in the lands of the Byzantines and chose the site of the city of al-Hadath, and spoke to al-Mahdi about building it and the building of Tarsus (the founding of al-Hadath). ¹
