Al-Fayyum, among Upper Egypt's districts; Amr ibn al-As (may God be pleased with him) sent Kharija ibn Hudhafa al-Adawi to it together with al-Ashmunayn, Ikhmim, al-Bashrudat and the Sa'id's villages — their people compounding on Fustat's terms.

Overview

al-Fayyum: one of the districts of Upper Egypt. Amr ibn al-As sent to it Kharija ibn Hudhafa al-Adawi, together with al-Ashmunayn, Ikhmim, al-Bushrudat and the villages of Upper Egypt. The people of its villages made peace on the same terms as the judgement of Fustat. 1

It is a site in the account of the four commanders in Egypt. See also Amr ibn al-As.

Fayyum in al-Maqrizi

Al-Maqrizi says that the site of al-Fayyum was where the Nile's water drained away, and that when Joseph took charge of Egypt's affairs, he made it habitable. 2

Citing Ibn Abd al-Hakam, al-Maqrizi reports that once the conquest was complete, Amr ibn al-As sent cavalry raids to the villages around it, and al-Fayyum remained for a year without the Muslims knowing where it was, until a man came and told them of it. 3
