Overview

Kharija ibn Hudhafa al-Adawi was in the army of al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam sent to Egypt, within the conquest of Egypt. 1

Amr ibn al-As dispatched him after the conquest of Fustat to the Fayyum, al-Ashmunayn, Ikhmim and the Bashrudat and the villages of Upper Egypt, and he settled with their people on the same terms as Fustat — counted among the four lieutenants in Egypt. 1

In al-Isaba

Ibn Hajar gives him his own entry in al-Isaba, no. 2142: "Kharija ibn Hudhafa ibn Ghanim ibn Amir ibn Abd Allah ibn Ubayd ibn Uwayj ibn Adi ibn Ka'b ibn Lu'ayy"; his mother was Fatima bint Amr ibn Bajra al-Adawiyya; he was one of the cavaliers — it was said his horse was valued at a thousand — and of the converts of the Conquest; Umar reinforced Amr ibn al-As with him, so he witnessed the conquest of Egypt with him, settled there, and was over Amr's security force. 2

His killing

Ibn Hajar records that it was said Amr ibn al-As appointed him to lead the prayer the night Ali was killed, and the Kharijite who had been assigned to kill Amr struck him instead, saying "I aimed at Amr but God willed Kharija". He has one hadith, on the witr. 2
