Uqba ibn Nafi' al-Fihri

عقبة بن نافع الفهري

Uqba ibn Nafi' al-Fihri; Amr ibn al-As (may God be pleased with him) gave him the Maghreb — he reached Zawila, all between it and Barqa submitting in good obedience, their Muslims paying sadaqa, covenant-holders confirmed in jizya, laid at what he judged they could bear: sadaqa taken from the rich returned to the poor, the dhimma's jizya borne to Egypt, tithe and half-tithe from Muslim lands.

Overview

Uqba ibn Nafi al-Fihri, of Quraysh, whom Amr ibn al-As appointed over the Maghrib. al-Baladhuri says that he founded Qayrawan 1.

The governorship of the Maghrib

He reached Zuwayla, and the people between it and Barqa were well-disposed in their obedience. Their Muslims paid the alms, and their covenanters affirmed the poll tax 1.

Ifriqiya and Qayrawan

He raided Ifriqiya with ten thousand men and conquered it, and laid out its Qayrawan. al-Baladhuri reports that its site had been a thicket, unsafe for crossing, full of beasts of prey and snakes. He built its congregational mosque on the spot where the muezzin had been shown to him in a dream 1.

Yazid ibn Mu'awiya returned him to his office, and he raided the Lower Sus 1. See his appointment to the Maghrib and the founding of Qayrawan.

Nafi, brother of Amr

Nafi was the maternal brother of Amr ibn al-As. After the conquest of Egypt, Amr sent him to the villages around it, and their horses entered the land of Nubia. The Muslims met fierce fighting until their eyes were put out, and so they were called "the eye-bleeders" 1.
