Overview
In the words of the historians
Al-Suyuti describes him as one of the handsomest of the young men, of excessive strength, with eloquence and rhetoric. He judges that he managed affairs badly and was lavish. He says that at the beginning of his allegiance he ordered a field built for playing ball. 4
Al-Mas'udi says that al-Rashid wrote the two conditions between him and his brother and hung them in the Ka'ba in 186 AH. When he intended to depose al-Ma'mun, Abdallah ibn Hazim urged him not to be the first of the caliphs to break his covenant, and he did not respond. 5 6
