Overview
Ali ibn Isa ibn Mahan, a commander of al-Amin. Al-Suyuti says al-Amin appointed him over the mountain lands in 195 AH, and he set out with forty thousand men to fight al-Ma'mun. Tahir ibn al-Husayn defeated him with fewer than four thousand men, and he was killed and his head carried to al-Ma'mun. 2 He took part in the battle of al-Rayy in 195 AH as one of the defeated.
In al-Mas'udi
Al-Mas'udi says that he said of Tahir that he was a thorn from its branches and a spark from its fire. When his troops came near al-Rayy he turned aside to a district, where Tahir defeated him, and a man known as Tahir ibn al-Raji slaughtered him. 3
