    Overview

Ibn al-Salus the merchant-scribe; he held the hisba of Damascus and conducted himself well, though people held the office beneath him — and soon he held the vizierate, entering Damascus in a procession the like of which was not known. 1

    His end

Before that he had fasted and made much dhikr; once vizier he grew arrogant toward people, the amirs above all, and wronged the man who had raised him to the sultan. When al-Malik al-Ashraf was killed he was seized and his wealth and kin uprooted; a warning letter had been written to him against the "Shuja'i's bite," and it afflicted him until he died. 1

    Al-Azhar Mosque

Al-Azhar at Cairo: founded by the Fatimids as the mosque of their da'wa, then turned by the vizier Ya'qub ibn Killis in 378 into a university teaching the sciences and letters — from a pulpit reserved for the Fatimid call into one of Egypt's foremost centres of learning beside the mosques of Amr, Ibn Tulun and al-Hakim.
