Overview
The imam and polymath 'Imad al-Din Abu'l-Qasim 'Abd al-Karim ibn Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Karim ibn al-Fadl al-Rafi'i al-Qazwini the Shafi'i; author of the celebrated Great Sharh on the Muharrar and of the Wajiz — mastery of the madhhab and its fine points ended with him, and with all his brilliance he was righteous, ascetic, given to devotions and humility. Ibn Qadi Shuhba said "most of our fellow jurists in these times refer to him throughout the lands," and Ibn al-Salah said "I doubt I saw his like in Persia." 2
His works
He composed al-'Aziz, a sharh of the Wajiz in a dozen volumes — al-Nawawi said nothing fuller had been written in the Shafi'i school — and a sharh of al-Shafi'i's Musnad which he transmitted; it is said that once, having no lamp oil in a village where he stayed, a vine shoot gave him light and he sat reading and writing by it. He died in 623. 2
