Overview
Al-Nu'man ibn Amr ibn Muqarrin al-Muzani, commander of the Muslim army at Nihawand. Al-Baladhuri says that he was governor of Kaskar and its region, and it is said he was in Medina. 1
Umar's appointment
Umar appointed him over the army of Nihawand. In the report Umar told him that he would employ him, and al-Nu'man said: "As a collector, no; but as a raider." Umar said: "Then you are a raider." He wrote to him that if Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman were killed he should succeed him, then Jarir ibn Abd Allah, then al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba, then al-Ash'ath ibn Qays. With him was al-Sa'ib ibn al-Aqra' al-Thaqafi. 1
At Nihawand
Al-Mas'udi relates his saying that he would wave his banner three times, and when he waved it the third time the people would charge. He prayed that God would give him martyrdom, and he was the first to fall. In his box he had a book with the names of his caliphs, one by one. 2
Notes for researchers
- The two reports come from two different sources. The data give no date for the battle of Nihawand, which needs an additional source.
