Life in time
Overview
Al-Malik al-Salih Isma'il ibn Nur al-Din Mahmud ibn Zangi. He succeeded his father as a boy when he died in 569 AH, and the Franks on the coasts were stirred to action and were bought off with money. 1
He afterwards became lord of Aleppo, and died there in Rajab 577 AH at about nineteen years old. 2
Ibn al-Athir relates that when his illness grew severe, the doctors prescribed wine as a remedy for him, but he refused until he had asked the jurists. One jurist ruled that it was permitted. He asked whether drinking wine would delay the term, and the jurist said no, so he refused. 2
He then directed that the city be handed to his cousin Izz al-Din Mas'ud, lord of Mosul, giving as his reason that he was able to protect it from Saladin. Ibn al-Athir describes him as forbearing, generous, and just towards his subjects. 2
