Overview
Abu Ziyan Muhammad ibn Uthman ibn Yaghmurasan, the third of the kings of the Banu Abd al-Wad, and ruler of the Zayyanid state in Tlemcen. He took power after his father Uthman ibn Yaghmurasan in 703 AH, when his father died in the bath-house in the fifth year of the siege of Tlemcen by Yusuf ibn Yaqub al-Marini. 1
The siege
Ibn Khaldun relates that his brother Abu Hammu Musa led people to believe that their sultan was the elder brother Abu Ziyan. The city held out for eight years and three months. Ibn Khaldun says they suffered hardship and hunger as no nation had, to the point of eating carrion, cats and rats, and they pulled down ceilings for fuel. The measure of wheat reached a weight of two and a half mithqal of gold. 1
The crisis ends
According to Ibn Khaldun, Yusuf ibn Yaqub was killed with a dagger by one of his eunuch slaves. He relates that the house of Zayyan had the phrase "How near is God's relief" struck on their coins, as a wonder at the event. 1
