Overview

Of Banu Sahm; he emigrated to Abyssinia and was killed at al-Yamama in the caliphate of Abu Bakr. 1

In the Abyssinian emigrants chapter

Ibn Ishaq names him among Banu Sahm in "the rest of the emigrants to Abyssinia", saying he was killed at al-Yamama in Abu Bakr's caliphate. 1

In al-Isaba

Ibn Hajar gives him his own entry in al-Isaba, no. 10476: "Abu Qays ibn al-Harith (may God be pleased with him) ibn Qays ibn Adi ibn Sa'd ibn Sahm, the Qurashi: he was among the first to Islam and among the emigrants to Abyssinia; he witnessed Uhud and what came after; he is the brother of Abd Allah ibn al-Harith. All of that is recorded by Muhammad ibn Ishaq, and Abu Umar transmits from Muhammad ibn Ishaq that his name was Abd Allah ibn al-Harith." 2

Source notes and markers of doubt

  • The name "Abu Qays" is unstable in transmission: Ibn Ishaq's maghazi copies agree that Abd Allah was his brother and that the recorded name is in fact a kunya; Ibn Hajar then carries the dispute about the man of this name in the story of the verse "do not marry women your fathers married" (4:22), where calling the speaker al-Aslat was said to be an error. The disagreement is kept as reported.

Tribe

He belongs, per Ibn Ishaq, to Banu Sahm 1
