Overview

Abu Qatada ibn Rib'i al-Ansari — it is well known that his name was al-Harith. Iyas ibn Salama reported from his father that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: the best of our horsemen is Abu Qatada; and Abu Nudra reported from Abu Sa'id that he was better than him. 1

His campaigns

Ibn Sa'd said he witnessed Uhud and what came after; Abu Ahmad al-Hakim said it is claimed he was a Badr veteran. One report has him guarding the Prophet on the night of Badr, and the Prophet praying for him; another that when the polytheists broke away toward the Prophet's milch-camels he caught up with them and killed Mas'ada, and the Prophet said on seeing him: the face has prospered. 1

His old age and death

Abd al-Razzaq transmitted from Ma'mar from Abdallah ibn Muhammad ibn Aqil that when Mu'awiya came to Medina he said to Abu Qatada: everyone came out to meet me except you Ansar. Al-Bukhari counted him in al-Awsat among those who died between fifty and sixty AH, and related that Marwan, as Mu'awiya's governor of Medina, sent for him to show him the places where the Prophet and his Companions had stood, and he went with him and showed him. 1
