Overview

Abu al-Mahasin Yusuf ibn Isma'il al-Shawwa, Shihab al-Din, a man of letters and a poet. The original entry says that he was of Kufan origin and of Aleppine upbringing and death, and Ibn Khallikan corrected it to say he was Aleppine. He was a master of prosody and rhyme, and his verse contains wondrous meanings in two or three lines; he had a large diwan in four volumes. 2

In Aleppo

His dress was that of the early Aleppines in clothing and in the split turban. He was constantly in the circle of Ibn al-Jubrani, the man of letters and philologist, in the mosque of Aleppo. Between him and Ibn Khallikan there was sincere friendship; Ibn Khallikan said of him: "an excellent companion." 2

Death

His birth is estimated as 562 AH, since he did not verify his birth. He died on Friday, the nineteenth of Muharram 635 AH in Aleppo, and was buried in the cemetery of the Gate of Antioch. 3
