Overview
The attack
The Domestic marched on Aleppo without the Muslims noticing, having left his army at Caesarea. Sayf al-Dawla did not know until the enemy had reached the city. He went out and fought, and most of his companions were killed. The Domestic found his house outside Aleppo, in which there were three hundred bags of dirhams and much weaponry. 2
In the city
The Byzantines opened a breach in the wall and entered by the sword. A thousand and four hundred Muslim captives in Aleppo were freed, and they took the weapons. Ten to twelve thousand boys and girls were taken captive from the town, and the mosques were burned. The Domestic stayed nine days and then withdrew, and the Muslim captives who were with him, numbering a thousand and two hundred, were put to death. 2
