Overview
Abd al-Rahman ibn Rabi'a, amir of al-Bab (the Gate of Gates) in the caliphate of Uthman. He was killed in 32 AH in his raid toward Balanjar. 2
The raid on Balanjar
Uthman wrote to him forbidding him to send the Muslims into the passes, fearing they would be killed. He did not turn back from his purpose, so the Turks and the Khazars gathered against him, fought him very fiercely, and he was killed. He was called "Dhu al-Nur" ("the possessor of light"), which was the name of his sword. 2
Ibn al-Athir says that the people of Balanjar put his body in a coffin and used it to seek rain. 2
The date of his death is derived from the Hijri year, and the conversion is not certain.
