Overview
Ibn al-Athir, in "al-Kamil", relates that the Khazars and the Turks defeated the Muslims in 32 AH at Balanjar. 2
The account
Uthman had written to Abd al-Rahman ibn Rabi'a, who was at the gate, forbidding him to storm it, and expressing his fear for the Muslims. But Abd al-Rahman raided toward Balanjar. They fought him very fiercely, and he was killed. The people were routed, and a group of them met Salman ibn Rabi'a, whom Sa'id ibn al-As had sent as reinforcement, and they were saved by him. 2
Among the army were Salman al-Farisi and Abu Hurayra. The source says that the people of Balanjar placed the body of the commander in a coffin, and used it to pray for rain. 2
