Overview
The hafiz and littérateur Abu'l-Hasan 'Abd al-Ghafir b. Isma'il al-Farisi — author of the Tarikh Nishapur, Majma' al-ghara'ib and al-Mufhim, a commentary on Muslim; an imam in hadith, language, adab and rhetoric and a Shafi'i jurist, he transmitted from the generation of his maternal grandfather Abu'l-Qasim al-Qushayri and held the licence of Abu Muhammad al-Jawhari among others. 1
His travels
He studied fiqh under Imam al-Haramayn, keeping his company four years and taking khilaf and fiqh from him, travelled widely and met the scholars, then returned to Nishapur and held its khitaba, taking tafsir and usul from his uncles Abu Sa'id 'Abdallah and Abu Sa'id 'Abd al-Wahid, sons of al-Qushayri; he died at Nishapur in 529 at seventy-eight. 1
