Overview

Nishapur is a city in Khurasan in north-eastern Iran. Its chief city is Abrashahr, one of the districts of Khurasan. It was an important centre for the science of hadith, and Imam Muslim, author of the Sahih, is attributed to it. 1

The conquest

The book Futuh al-Buldan mentions that Abd Allah ibn Amir besieged it for months. The lord of one of its quarters asked for safe conduct and admitted the Muslims by night. Its marzban took refuge in the citadel (al-qahandiz), and then made peace for all of it for one million dirhams, or it is said seven hundred thousand. Qays ibn al-Haytham al-Sulami governed it. 2

In the geographers' books

Al-Mas'udi mentions that Zoroaster son of Aspiman made a fire temple in it. 3 Al-Maqdisi mentions its Ribas, the harisa dish of its people, the turquoise mine in its district, the council of grievances, and the seat of judgement in the Mosque of Raja'. 4
