«مَا خَترَ قَوْمٌ بِالْعَهْدِ، إِلَّا سَلَّطَ اللّهُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعَدُوَّ»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
Malik was asked whether a gesture of safe-conduct is the same as speech; he said yes, and he thinks the armies should be instructed not to kill anyone they signalled safe-conduct to, since a gesture is like speech for him. It reached him that Abdullah ibn Abbas (may God be pleased with him) said: no people has broken a covenant except that God gave the enemy power over them. The editor notes that Ibn Abd al-Barr said the meaning of the hadith is connected through sound routes, including the hadith of Buraydah al-Aslami in Muslim's Sahih. 1
