- Malik ibn Anas
- Sayfi, mawla of Ibn Aflah
Summary
Malik transmits from Safi, client of Ibn Aflah, from Abu al-Saib, client of Hisham ibn Zuhra, that he entered upon Abu Said al-Khudri (may God be pleased with him) and found him praying; he heard a stirring under his bed, and found a snake. He got up to kill it, but Abu Said signalled to him to sit. When he finished, he showed him a room in the house, and told him that a young man of the Ansar, newly married, went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ to the Trench, and asked permission to visit his household; he was allowed, and ordered to take up his weapon for fear of Banu Qurayza. He found his wife between two doors, and jabbed at her with his spear; she said: do not hurry, until you enter and see what is in your house. He went in and found a snake coiled on his bed; he drove his spear into it, and the snake writhed on the spear-head, and the young man and the snake died, and it is not known which died first. They told the Prophet, who said: there are jinn in Medina who have become Muslims; if you see any of them, warn them for three days, and if they appear after that, kill them, for it is a devil. 1
