Summary

Malik transmits from Abu Layla ibn Abdallah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Sahl, from Sahl ibn Abi Hathma, that men of the elders of his people told him that Abdallah ibn Sahl and Muhayyisa went out to Khaybar because of hardship that had struck them. Muhayyisa was told that Abdallah ibn Sahl had been killed and thrown into a well or a spring. He went to the Jews and said: you killed him. They said: by God, we did not kill him. He returned to his people and told them. Then he came with his brother Huwayyisa and Abd al-Rahman. Muhayyisa went to speak, and the Prophet ﷺ said to him: the eldest, the eldest, meaning by age. Huwayyisa spoke and then Muhayyisa, and the Prophet said: either they pay blood-money for your companion, or they should be warned of war. He wrote to them, and they wrote back: by God, we did not kill him. The Prophet said to Huwayyisa, Muhayyisa and Abd al-Rahman: will you swear and claim the blood of your companion? They said: no. He said: then should the Jews swear to you? They said: they are not Muslims. The Prophet paid the blood-money himself and sent them a hundred camels, until they were brought into the house. Sahl said: a red camel kicked me among them. Malik said: the well is the 'faqir'. The editor notes that Malik's transmitters differ on the chain of this hadith, and that in some routes Abu Layla's report from Sahl ibn Abi Hathma confirms its continuity. 1
