«أمن نعم الجزية هي أم من نعم الصدقة؟»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
Malik transmits from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, who said to Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him): there is a blind she-camel in the herd. Umar said: give it to a household that can benefit from it. I asked: even though it is blind? He said: let them lead it with the camels. I asked: how will it eat from the land? Umar asked: is it from the camels of the jizya or from the camels of charity? I said: from the camels of the jizya. Umar said: by God, you wanted to eat it. I said: it bears the brand of the camels of the jizya. Umar ordered it slaughtered. He had nine trays, and no fruit or delicacy arrived without his putting some of it in them; he sent the last of these to his daughter Hafsa, and if there was a shortfall it was from her share. He put meat from that camel in those trays and sent it to the Prophet ﷺ's wives, and he ordered what remained cooked and invited the Muhajirun and the Ansar to it. The editor notes that Abu Musab and Suwayd transmitted it from Malik. 1
